Trinity Academy, St Edward’s, Barnsley

The Orwell Society continues to encourage education, in locations associated with George Orwell.

As part of his researches for The Road to Wigan Pier, George Orwell spent the second part of March 1936 in Barnsley, where he had made at least one shorter visit earlier in the month. His experiences were as various as another excursion down a coal-mine, and attending a public meeting given by the Fascist leader Oswald Mosley.

Our photograph shows George Orwell’s son Richard Blair and Orwell Society Chair Quentin Kopp in the school Library, which is equipped with books donated by the Orwell Society. Along with the Head Girl and Head Boy is staff member Amy Minney, winner of the OS Bursary in Schools Award which will help with curriculum development.
