Orwell Society members: trip to Orwell’s Barcelona

For the attention of Orwell Society members:

Barcelona Trip   18th – 20th May 2012

A tour for members is being organised in and around Barcelona on the weekend of 18th – 20th May to commemorate the 75th anniversary of George Orwell’s wounding in trenches outside Huesca in May 1937. The tour will incorporate the war zone areas that feature in George Orwell’s account of his time serving on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War published as Homage to Catalonia. The tour is being organised by local historian Alan Warren and will also feature a presentation on the Saturday afternoon by Quentin Kopp the son of Orwell’s Commanding Officer Georges Kopp in the Monastery in Lecinena. Also included is a guided walk along The Ramblas, identifying key locations described by Orwell during the May riots that resulted in the Communist-led purging of the anarchists and of the POUM factions. Additional information about this tour is provided in the January newsletter now available to all current members and to new members upon receipt of the required subscription.

Return flights to Barcelona for the event are available on easyjet from just £104 retutn.

In addition to the flights, the cost of the tour, including two nights accommodation, will be in the region of 300 euros.
