Christmas WWII

In his concluding paragraphs to his London Letters to Partisan Review magazine in the USA, written during the Second World War, George Orwell sometimes commented indirectly on the food situation .

Here are his observations on two Second World War Christmases,

Notice how Orwell is able to use the colour of the Christmas puddings, dependent on dried fruit imported from the Far East or equitorial regions, as a measure of the “shipping situation”, or as it might be put more seriously, the U-Boat Threat. Orwell implies that the U-Boat Threat did not increase in 1942, the same level of food was imported.
