Announcing Orwell: 1933

Richard Young describes the publicity that Victor Gollancz gave his new author, George Orwell, and that author’s first book, Down And Out In Paris And London.

In its general catalogue for the first part of 1933 the publishing house of Victor Gollancz …

… gave George Orwell’s Down And Out In Paris And London a full page write-up. The manuscript/proofs had already been in circulation, and the book carried the recommendation of the Book Society.

Gollancz called the book “extraordinarily forceful and socially important”, and finally “completely convincing and utterly terrible”. The public were soon to find the truth of those remarks.
