Nuria, Just watched your wonderful film. It’s so beautifully put together and the sound overlay is just stunning: Joan’s haunting music and the staccato of the typewriter reminding us that it is Orwell the writer to whom we owe our knowledge of this fragment of the civil war and also that there is a writer (Nuria) who has put together this moving narrative of the present-day meeting with Orwell in the past at Huesca. The finale with the sound of the typewriter return and the ‘bing’ of the end is inspired! And also what a treat to hear and see mi compañero Victor Pardo in full form. Thanks you for this. I hope this film documentary gets a wide circulation. JK
Dear Judith,
Thank you for wonderful comments on Nuria’s evocative film. Victor in full flow is one of the highlights of these visits to Spain which I organise for The Orwell Society, in normal circumstances every other year. We visit Barnhill on Jura on the intervening year.
I can assure you that Nuria’s film is getting a very wide circulation, not only on our web site but on sites in Spain and elsewhere in Europe through Nuria’s academic connections.
I wonder, would you like to join The Orwell Society? I am Chair of the Society and the son of Georges Kopp, who I am sure that you will have met if you have read “Homage to Catalonia”. I cannot see you on the membership list. If you are a member, I apologise, but if you would like to join it is very easy https://orwellsociety.com/how-to-join/
I look forward to welcoming you. If you to the George Talks tab you can get a flavour of our lively activity even during the strictures of Covid!
Nuria, first of all thank you for making this film, and indeed the soundtrack is fantastic.
Many memories of great conviviality come back to memory. This visit was a very intense moment, historically, emotionally… I hope that this type of visit can start again in the near future.
Thank you also to Victor and Elena for the welcome, the historical contributions …
I loved this film. Currently editing Student papers on Homage to Catalonia and reading to really understand the war in context. This film is the perfect bridge between the wider politics and Orwell’s personal narrative. Thank you to the Society for keeping this wonderful sage alive. I am sharing it with a worthy audience.
