George Orwell’s birthday walk
On Sunday 23rd June the Orwell Society will be marking George Orwell’s birthday (which falls on 25th June) with a visit to Sutton Courtenay including a short ceremony at Orwell’s grave at All Saints’ Church, with a reading by Richard Blair. We hope this will become an annual event.
There will be an optional walk at 2.00pm, suitable for all abilities, meeting outside the George and Dragon pub.
The All Saints’ Church will be open for the afternoon for a sale of local art and second hand books. The Church will be selling cream teas. If you do attend please can I encourage you to contribute through a donation or purchase.
The ceremony will be at the graveside at 3.00pm.
Sutton Courtenay is 10 miles south of Oxford or 13 miles west of the M40. It is 2 miles from the nearest rail station at Appleford which is on the Paddington to Oxford line, trains stop there occasionally on a Sunday. Please let us know by clicking here if you would like a lift from and to the station and we will see what we can do to arrange this.
The village has three pubs, The George and Dragon (no relation….), The Swan and The Fish. All do Sunday lunch for those arriving in time but pre-booking (please book yourself) is essential. A few of us will be dining in the George and Dragon, next to the church, at 12.30. The George and Dragon telephone number is 01235 848142 to book a table. When booking please mention the Society and they will try to seat us near each other.
