2nd Annual Orwell’s Birthday visit to Sutton Courtenay, 22nd June 2014

The Orwell Society decided last year to make a visit to the Church of All Saint’s, Sutton Courtenay to visit the grave of George Orwell. This is an annual opportunity for us to show our respect on the nearest Sunday to his birthday, which is on the 25th June.

The Orwell Society is rapidly becoming a lively and interesting Society, because we have such a wonderful group of members. As the Members have come to events like this and the London Walk as well as the longer events in Spain and Jura, many friendships have been made. I would like to encourage members to come to these events to meet up and continue to build their friendships, alongside the primary purpose of the events.

Yesterday was sunny and warm and the congregation of the Church gave us a matching welcome with their flower show, with arrangements including “Animal Farm”. We met up around midday and having organised our lunch at the George and Dragon, went for a lovely circular walk by the River.

At the graveside Richard Blair read two short articles on English Cooking and Orwell’s recommendations to make a very English cup of tea. The controversy over milk first or second continues to this day. A good forty or so members of the Society, the congregation and visitors attracted by the event really enjoyed the event.

Gavin, Orwell’s Grandson and his family were able to join us this year. Archie, Bella and Connie Gavin’s children placed Roses on the grave after Richard’s reading.
