Documentary: Orwell..! …but why?
This is the first ever documentary made on the millennium writer George Orwell’s birthplace (Motihari, Bihar). The documentary answers two major questions:
Why there is ignorance behind the birthplace of a world renowned author?
Why should the birthplace of a ‘British’ author should be preserved?
Motihari is a small town in North Bihar. It is famous for being the place of Mahatma Gandhi’s satyagraha which became the thresh hold to the Gandhian freedom struggle. Motihari is also the place where the author of celebrated novels like ‘animal farm’ and ‘1984’ was born. Unfortunately, a major part of the population is unaware of this fact that a great personality of 20th century was born at their native place. People who have some idea that a British author was born there, they simply tend to ask, ‘why should we promote an ‘angrez’in a place like ‘Motihari’ which is known for its contribution in the Indian freedom struggle?’
The documentary focuses on Orwell’s ideologies and highlights the condition of the author’s birthplace. It also depicts the attempts made by the Rotary Motihari Lake Town and the State government to preserve and develop the birthplace which will contribute in the development of Bihar.
The research for this documentary is based on Orwell’s biography and quotes from his novel. Further information has been gathered from interviews of some renowned journalists, Orwell experts and government officials. George Orwell’s son, Richard Orwell Blair has also been interviewed. One of the important persons has been interviewed is Jay Dubashi, only Indian who was very close to Orwell during his last days.
The documentary is produced by George Orwell Commemorative Committee Rotary Motihari Lake Town. The research, direction and scripting is done by a Delhi based freelance journalist, Bishwajeet Mookherjee. A famous photographer and journalist from Punjab, Rajat Sain, has done the camera and editing work. The voiceover is done by a Delhi based Radio Jockey, Hardik Mehta. The translation work has been done by Ruchi Pradhan. She is also a journalist in a prominent news channel. The documentary will release in Motihari on 21st January, 2014 which is the death anniversary of George Orwell.
