An Orwell Society application form on every seat, I hope. At Letchworth I made a point of handing them to people as they took their seats. Great way of introducing the society to people. Once you get past that English reserve – yes, make a nuisance of yourself! – you find that great and wonderful affection for Orwell, which we should always be promoting. Don’t be shy!!!

  2. Quentin Kopp says:

    Pete,

Dione and Christopher are ensuring that we are well equipped to proselytize!!

  3. Richard Blair says:

Quentin Kopp and I attended this conference and we were very well received by Dolores Long, the chairman of the ILP conference, being mentioned at the start of the proceedings and given the microphone at the start of the afternoons lectures to promote the Orwell Society, what I started was driven home with great gusto by Quent after which he handed out some 20 odd applications between the stage and our seats. One application came back within minutes filled in and signed. So we are hopeful of some more new members.
As for the conference itself, it was a very interesting day; devoted to Orwell and the Homage to Catalonia. All four speakers, Richard Baxell, Christopher Hall, Dr Tom Buchanan and Prof. Paul Preston, who had his presentation read for him as he was unwell and couldn’t attend, offered what I thought was a well balanced analysis of his book. I don’t think that there anything that was glaringly controversial in their lectures. They were all very pro Orwell and had done their research well, being very much in awe of the man. Some of the questions from the floor were more along the lines of “erudite” statements, because they loved the sound of their own voices!
All in all it was an excellent day and well worth going to. I estimated that there were about 200 people in attendance.

  4. Quentin Kopp says:

I would like to endorse Richard’s comments on the day with the International Brigade. We could not have been made more welcome and the quality of the speakers was excellent.
Anyone with an interest in the Spanish Civil War will have the opportunity to learn a lot at these events.
