Orwell: World Heritage

“a great honour”

Orwell Archive and UNESCO Memory of the World International Register

We are pleased to announce that the Orwell papers in the Orwell Archive at University College London has been formally inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World International Register.  This is a prestigious award, achieved after a very competitive and selective process and this success is due to a wonderful application made by Gill Furlong before her retirement.

Sarah Aitchison of University College writes: “UNESCO’s UK Committee is holding an awards ceremony on 19 September, 18:00-20:00, at Imperial [College, London] where they are making presentations to successful applicants to the UK Heritage Register, but also honouring new inscriptions to the International Register.  Gill and I will be attending this event.”

Richard Blair, son of George Orwell, and patron of the Orwell Society, has said “What a great honour to have such an accolade bestowed on George Orwell and the Archives.” Richard has been invited to join the September awards ceremony.
