The Orwell Society Annual General Meeting was held in London on April 22nd, 2023, with members present both in person and virtually.
Quentin Kopp (Chair) and Richard Blair (Patron) standing
Quentin Kopp (Chair) in his survey of the year was able to report that the society continues to grow in membership, that its charitable functions in sponsoring schools and students have been maintained, and that our information about Orwell and his work continues to reach the world.
Mischa Burrows, winner of the Orwell Society Dystopian Fiction competition received his prize, and a bust of George Orwell to keep for a year.
Robert Morton gave an illustrated report on the Society’s visit to Eton College.
In a fascinating talk our speaker Kenan Malik spoke on “Race, Class and Empire: Placing Orwell in a wider frame”, and then welcomed questions about the subject.

Presentations were made to retiring Secretary Neil Smith and Education Officer Ann Kronbergs.
The winner of the 2023 edition of the Society’s Brain of Orwell competition was Steve Foulger, who receives credit to be used at Scarthin Books of Cromford.

Was curious about the membership numbers currently? Also about where and what type of student programs were sponsored. School play versions of Animal Farm I am hoping among them. Lectures at schools by Orwell scholars? A new production of the play Orwell wrote for his school I think would be terrific, provided a set of twins in the class.
