Spied in Stirling

Hans K Clausen’s ‘The Winston Smith Library of Victory and Truth’ has reached the University of Stirling, in association with the Centre for Research into Information, Surveillance and Privacy, and Quentin Kopp of the Orwell Society has brought back images of the exhibition.

CRISP describe ‘The Library’

The Winston Smith Library of Victory and Truth is a work by artist Hans K Clausen. It is a visual art installation, a sculpture, a library, a museum, a curiosity, a venue, consisting solely of one novel, 1,984 copies of George Orwell’s iconic novel 1984, donated and sourced from around the world.

In the centre of this exhibit is a copy of Fido Nesti’s graphic adaptation of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four donated by Richard Blair, son of George Orwell.

In this long view of the exhibition a copy of Nineteen Eighty-Four, published by Penguin Books in the 1960s, donated by Orwell Society Chair Quentin Kopp (son of Georges Kopp, George Orwell’s commander in Spain), can be seen top left above the Nesti edition. The exhibition takes it name from Winston Smith, the protagonist of George Orwell’s novel, a work first published in 1949. The work has become known worldwide and has been translated into many languages, exemplified in the copies of Orwell’s novel now comprising the Winston Smith Library.

The Winston Smith Library of Victory and Truth exhibition is at the University of Stirling Library, Central Campus, from 26 January 2025 – 23 February 2025, 9am to 5pm. Entry is free.
